Abstract:
|
In this project, I examine some of the pros and cons of using Hollywood films to help educate students, focusing specifically on the use of films to teach about terrorism. In doing so, I draw heavily from other work that has examined the usefulness of films in the political science classroom. Here, I pay particular attention to two films; one, The Battle of Algiers, because it is widely recognized as an effective teaching tool about terrorism; the other, The Siege, because it is frequently used in International Relations courses, but may provide some misleading information about terrorism, at least when unaccompanied by the appropriate readings and/or discussion. I also discuss a number of other films that provide useful illustrations of certain elements of terrorism. |
