Abstract:
|
How a social movement organization (SMO) achieves public visibility remains a mystery to scholars, even though visibility is an integral component of the definition of a social movement. Drawing on ethnographic observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of a South African sexual minority movement organizations website, the author examines how the organization employs amateur journalism to promote itself and the movement throughout Africa. Using the strategic choices framework (Jasper 2004) to understand SMO visibility as the result of strategic decision making, the author investigates how the sexual minority movement organization to promote the movement and itself to target audiences. |
