Abstract:

This paper explores the experience of self-care for 10-14-year-old children during the after-school hours. The choice for self-care is based on many factors, including each child’s comfort, maturity, and ability to handle unexpected situations. But even when children are already in self-care, parents and children may view the experience differently. This paper examines how the perspectives of autonomy and risk influence children’s attitudes and parents’ beliefs about self-care and how these views help to shape children’s experiences of caring for themselves during the after-school hours.
