Abstract:

This paper examines the frames used by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) to construct the work they do, their relationship with other agencies, and victims of sexual assault. The paper is based on preliminary findings from participant observation and in-depth interviews with SANEs and volunteer rape crisis advocates. I build on the work of Martin (2005) who examines the subcultures of various occupational groups that respond to and process rape victims. She argues that despite improvements in recent years, the policies and practices of many agencies that are supposed to help sexual assault victims actually contribute to re-victimization. One occupational group missing from Martin’s work is the newly emerging Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). SANEs frame their work primarily as specialized health care providers and the victims of sexual assault primarily as patients. In addition, they frame their role as an objective witness in the courtroom. For these reasons, I suggest that SANE programs may be a key component in alleviating re-victimization.
