Abstract:

This paper examines the multifaceted analyses of Pierre Bourdieu on intellectuals, social science, and politics in contemporary society. It focuses on the question of the public role of the social scientist from Bourdieus perspective, and looks at his assessment of the interplay between institutional constraints, the conventional practices of scholars, and the knowledge of the academic world. Bourdieu argued that the symbolic power of intellectuals enables them to play a key role in supporting the current system of domination but it also gives them the potential to transform society at a fundamental level. He recognized that in order for social scientists to approach their work independently, they would need to develop a base of support that is not connected to the dominant institutional framework. To this end, he proposed the formation of a global network of intellectuals, where the development of ideas and research priorities could unfold in a way that was less constrained than in the present. I argue that while Bourdieus suggestions in this regard are certainly unorthodox, they address the very real limitations facing social scientists today and provide a relevant alternative to the current state of affairs.

Gattone Department of Sociology University of Florida Gainesville Florida 32611 cgattone@soc.ufl.edu Pierre Bourdieu offered a great many contributions to the field of sociology and to the social sciences broadly but one could argue that none of these was as significant as his position on the interplay between knowledge and politics.
