Abstract:

Hochschild’s argument in The Time Bind and The Second Shift implies that as individuals will revert to more traditional ideals of family life if, over time, they are unable to achieve needed work and family balance. This applies to all individuals attempting to balance work and family life, but especially subgroups more likely to fall into the Time Bind, such as working women and men married to working women. Using the General Social Survey International Social Science Project, I find a clear and pervasive shift toward increased traditionalism in work and family attitudes. While shifts toward increased traditionalism were found for all groups, part time working women and men married to part time working women experienced the greatest degree of change. Implications of these findings are discussed.
