Abstract:

Current group comparisons indicate that, despite social and legal attempts to remove institutional barriers, there remains a persistent disparity in the college going patterns of U.S. youth based gender, racial-ethnic identification and privilege. This paper describes a study of nearly 300 high school students at the predisposition stage of the Hossler and Gallagher college choice process. The study’s purpose was to determine the social influences students perceived to be most important during predisposition, and influence differentiation when considering student characteristics.

Much of the extant literature on postsecondary access and attainment focuses on issues of matriculation and retention. Many studies take for granted the ways that traditional understandings of student characteristics account for student predisposition to participating in postsecondary education. The results of this study illuminate some of the differences in influences that predispose students to college going and differences in educational aspirations among students based on gender, racial-ethnic identity and privilege. The findings highlight some implications these differences have for the way that schools and communities facilitate the transition from high school to college.
