Lions, Tigers, and Dragons, Oh My: Asian American Intermarriage with Whites, Blacks, Latinos, and Asians

Abstract:

While there is debate over whether intermarriage represents cultural assimilation on the individual or the structural level, there is little doubt that marrying outside one’s own ethnic group is perhaps the most tangible and most visible form of behavioral and cultural assimilation. In fact, several sociologists note that intermarriage is perhaps the ultimate and final breakdown of social distance and completion of assimilation. This research compares rates of intermarriage with Whites, Blacks, Hispanics/Latinos, and other Asian Americans for five Asian American ethnic groups. Incorporating structural and ecological measures that impact the cultural environment that frames individual-level choices Asian Americans make in their lives, this research goes beyond existing studies on Asian American intermarriage by (1) broadening the geographic coverage to include the entire U.S., rather than just one state or metropolitan area; (2) examining intermarriage rates for Asians with not just Whites and other Asians, but with Blacks and Hispanics/Latinos separately as well; and (3) presenting up-to-date results using Census 2000 data.
