Abstract:

It has now almost been two decades since men have become the explicit subject of gender analysis. While research on men as men has come from a variety of ideological and theoretical perspectives, the point of inception of men’s studies has been to a significant extent feminist theory. Research on men as men has produced a plethora of information that has provided critical insight into the heterogeneous processes of making men. Interestingly, despite a close affinity to feminist research, there has been an overwhelming focus on masculinity per se, which has no parallel in Women’s Studies.
My paper traces the extent to which this research has tackled the question of domination and subordination as gendered processes. In reviewing the history and directions taken by research on Men and Men’s Studies, I examine the questions of whether and how the focus on masculinity has helped to recognize structures of gendered oppression or to what extent it has rather lead to a retrenchment of oppressive masculinities in a new disguise.
