Abstract:

This study investigates the ways in which family structure and quality of parenting predict adolescent risky sexual behavior. The research questions are addressed using survey data collected from a sample of 2047 undergraduates enrolled at one of two state universities. Regression analysis was employed to test these ideas. Separate path analyses were performed by gender of respondent. Results indicate that, for both males and females, quality of parenting and family structure are indirectly related to risky sexual behavior through their influence on mediating variables. Family structure and quality of parenting influence adolescents’ commitment to the institution of marriage and the importance of value similarity in a partner (versus sexual compatibility). These two constructs, in turn, are associated with the belief that sex should take place in committed relationship which is strongly inversely related to age at first intercourse and number of premarital sexual partners. Additionally, there is a direct effect of family structure and quality of parenting on risky sexual behavior. Adolescents from a single parent home are more likely to engage in early sex and sex with multiple partners than are adolescents from a two-parent home. Similarly, adolescents who perceive their relationship with their parents as warm and loving are less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior.
