Abstract:

This paper examines the relationship between adolescent family background and higher education in a level of detail that has not been previously available. Specifically, I will explore three mechanisms that may account for the disadvantage adolescents from non-intact families experience in terms of postsecondary education. For these analyses, I will use the newly available Postsecondary Education Transcript Study (PETS) data of the High School and Beyond (HS&B) sophomore cohort and the college transcript data of the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS) of 1988 to predict college entry, persistence, and degree attainment. Not only is this research important, but it is also timely given the current policy discussions and the recent availability of finely-tuned data about students collegiate experience.
