Abstract:

Purpose: To present baseline results from an evaluation of an intergenerational university program for older adults at the University of Valencia (Spain). The "Nau Gran" was initiated during the academic year of 1999-2000 with 71 older adult students and it now serves 572 . The structure of the program allows older adults to attend classes, collaborate in research projects, and share facilities and resources at the university. Older adult students share with younger students the instruction and academic activities.
Method: Using a quasi-experimental design Time 1 data was collected from a sample of 428 in the program in the Fall semester 2002. The questionnaire included socio-demographic information and items regarding health, social network, community participation, university integration, intergenerational relations, university involvement, academic and instructional aspects of the program, and quality of life. In addition, qualitative data was collected using four focus groups of older students in the program.
Results: The initial analyses of outcomes of the program showed significant incremental differences by length of exposure with regards to: perceived social network, social integration, knowledge and use of university services, and quality of life. Older adults manifested an interest to: a) learn new information, including the use of new technology; b) increase their level of interaction with younger students by exchanging notes, participating in the same activities, having the same levels of input on decision-making processes; and c) receive equal attention and treatment as students by the instructors and faculty in the program regarding type of assignments and academic evaluation.

POSTER Social Integration and Quality of Life: Benefits of a University Inter-Generational Program in Valencia (Spain)1 Julian Montoro-Rodriguez Ph.D. (Kent State University) And Sacramento Pinazo Hernandis (University of Valencia) Introduction: The University of Valencia (Spain) initiated during the academic year of 1999-2000 an intergenerational program entitled “Nau Gran” for older adults of age 55 years and over. The main objective of this intergenerational program is to encourage contact between generations in particular between young and older adult students. The
their own grandchildren and other relatives. Conclusions: Although these initial group differences are only indicative they are in the expected direction. It also appears that specific actions such as the development of an initial orientation and training for older adult students on University Services (libraries computer labs etc.) and a focus on social activities might enhance the ultimate benefits of this intergenerational university program in Valencia. The potential impact of the “Nau Gran” will be fully evaluated when longitudinal
