Abstract:
|
This paper is an account of participant observation research in a newly organized joint church/community youth outreach center in a small Midwestern town. Conflicting social images of youth in the community as both "at risk" and risky led to the establishment of the center. The Bridge Youth Ministry Center provided a wonderful site to observe how young people worked to create (through cooperation and contention with adults) a social space for themselves in a public place provided by concerned adults in the community to foster structured and supervised activities for youth throught to be both endangered and potentially dangerous. The paper also addresses the debate concerning the efficacy of faith-based programs for youth outreach. |

| Public Places and Social Spaces: Tenuous Ties Between Youth and Community Children and adolescents project wildly contrasting images in the social imagination today. On the one hand they are seen as fragile beings thought to be “at risk” for various serious problems while on the other they are often portrayed as an increasingly dangerous group in society. These ambivalent concerns have spawned vast amounts of research on children and youth. Educators sociologists psychologists and others join the general public |
