clearly necessary that a greater understanding of the processes and mechanisms by which individuals come to be
employed in one job or another be examined further. The suggestion made within this study is that such
examinations clearly need to direct more attention to the familial context. As previously suggested, the impact of
gender may be more subtle, potentially affecting students’ educational experiences and subsequent occupational
trajectories in ways which are difficult to detect within a survey research format. The familial context is a very
intricate and dynamic environment in which the developmental processes involving educational and occupational
goals occur, and it clearly warrants greater examination, particularly in regard to the extent to which gender-related
effects exist.
