Abstract:

The efficacy of family and community involvement interventions to impact student outcomes has been called into question by researchers and policymakers who believe studies are needed that compare students receiving a partnership intervention to those that are not. This study addresses these calls, using data from the state of Ohio to compare the achievement and attendance of students in elementary schools working on school, family, and community partnerships to those in schools that are not working on partnerships. Analyses showed that, on average, schools working to implement school, family, and community partnerships had greater improvement in student attendance from one year to the next than did schools in the comparison group. Further analyses found that, after controlling for prior levels of attendance, elementary schools that had higher quality programs and conducted better outreach to all families tended to have higher rates of daily attendance from one year to the next. |
