Abstract:
|
While previous studies have demonstrated that the transition to marriage is different for males and females, few have sought to more precisely examine the mechanisms by which the timing of marriage occurs. This study further proposes that the relative influence of parents, peers, and individual characteristics will vary across ethnic groups in the United States. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study (1988-2000), it is shown
that while Hispanics and Whites are more likely to have married by their mid- to late-20s, substantial variations exist between the sexes. Asians and Whites appear to be more susceptible to the influence of family characteristics,
while Hispanics and African-Americans are more readily affected by peer characteristics. The implications of the findings and the interweave of ethnicity and gender in mate selection processes are discussed. |
