Abstract:

Modern Turkish national identity has been characterized by an uneasy in -between-ness of West and East, modern and traditional, European and Middle Eastern, and secular and Islamic. This paper examines gender and sexual identities among young adults who came of age amid 1980s societal changes that have radically destabilized Turkey’s “imagined national community.” Focusing on tensions between the shifting hegemonic definitions of gender - from “self-less” feminine and “protective” masculine to individualized selfhood by continued investment in virginity- this paper aims to illuminate the emergence of alternative modernities/modern selves.
