Abstract:

My paper examines my experiences integrating a Service Learning component into my Urban Sociology class at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. I critically examine the 22 student evaluations turned at the end of the course, highlighting both strengths and challenges of the Service Learning component. This paper provides both empirical data and critical analysis useful to other sociologists with an interest in Service Learning. The paper includes an overview of the Service Learning Project, the course syllabus, analysis of samples of student evaluations of their SL experiences, and implications for Service Learning in undergraduate courses.

being leveraged. Students can do better projects than they are often asked to do and professors should not be too shy about demanding challenging work. What good are graduates if they do not have field experience and professors cannot trust upper-division students to do competent work in their fields? See also question 5. 7) I think a mid-quarter paper done on an individual basis that represents a significant part of the literature review would help groups get started earlier
