Abstract:
|
To increase the likelihood of resiliency of adolescents in single mother families (SMFs), it is important to sort out the factors that buffer as well as amplify the effects of family structure. In this paper, using a sample of over 12,000 adolescents from the AddHealth data, we examine the effects of three potential buffers: supportiveness of single mothers, involvement with non-resident fathers, and ethnicity. We also examine whether ethnic groups vary in the effectiveness of these buffers. We use Mancova (ethnicity by family structure with controls) to compare white, black, Hispanic, and Asian American adolescents in two parent families to those in SMFs with and without supportive mothers or involved non-resident fathers. Results indicate that supportive mothering buffers the effects of family structure, but the effectiveness of father involvement is inconsistent, varying by ethnicity and by type of outcome examined. While father involvement buffers the effects of SMFs on adolescent distress, it does not buffer the effects on delinquency. Involvement of Asian American fathers in SMFs is associated with higher delinquency than when fathers are not involved. We propose that effectiveness of parenting may vary depending upon an ethnic groups’ experience with single parent families, and on the degree to which an ethnic group stigmatizes these family structures. |

| January 15 2004 Dear Reviewers I am submitting a proposal for a poster to be displayed at the American Sociological Association Meetings in San Francisco. I have attached a copy of a brief paper that will provide the material for the poster. I expanded the poster material into this brief paper so that the reviewers could judge the quality of the work. For the poster my co-author and I will present the material in the more succinct poster format. |
