Abstract:

As increasing numbers of college students seek gainful employment during their academic years, many research efforts have sought to identify and understand what effects such activity might have on such consequences as academic employment, appreciation and liking for the academic experience and retention. The literature in this area has a number of characteristics which limit the ability to understand this relationship. Many of the studies are ten or more years old, most of the studies are, primarily, descriptive and there are contradictory findings regarding the effects of major variables related to gainful employment. In an attempt to address these characteristics, this study employs a large dataset collected in 2003 that measures important variables using Identity theory. Results, implications and many suggestions for future research are discussed.

Benson Jeanne Mekolichick Department of Sociology Department of Sociology Kent State University Radford University INTRODUCTION There is little doubt that students in higher education are more likely to be gainfully employed now than at any time in recent decades.
