Abstract:
|
This research examines the role, function, and status of critics and criticism in commercial popular art worlds by focusing specifically upon the medium of television. Relying on data collected at four points in time between 1985 and 2000 on all U.S. television series debuting in the fall seasons, we address how the complex business context of the television industry today affects critics' view of their role relative to their readership, the creative community, their employers, and the networks and advertisers, and how it is reflected in the criticism they write. Analyses found that television critics attend to evaluative criteria that are distinct to the medium of television, focus on writers and producers over other art world participants who are central to the creation and production of a series, and attend to aesthetic evaluation, emphasizing qualities consistent with entertainment value and a popular aesthetic, and foregrounding genre to frame these discussions. Critics appear to speak to multiple constituencies, giving equal attention to potential audience acceptance and commercial success of the series. |
