Abstract:

Can self-employment be categorized as an effective strategy for managing the demands of work and family in couples in which both spouses wish to remain in the workforce? Based on data from a sample of 1558 middle-class dual-earner couples in upstate New York, this study examines the impact of couple-level strategies of organizational- and self-employment arrangements on objective and subjective measures of work and family success. At the individual level, self-employment among women carries a price in terms of economic success in comparison to organizationally employed women. However, when examining couple–level strategies of employment arrangements, we find that these women pay an economic price as individuals but not as part of a couple. The same picture emerges for self-employed men in the sample, except in the case of feeling of balancing work and family (i.e., they feel less successful than organizationally employed men, net of other individual characteristics). However, perhaps the most notable finding is that couple-type had almost no effect on subjective measures of success. Overall, then, it seems that self-employment does entail economic costs at the individual level, but they do not entail much in terms of subjective measures of success of either spouse in the relationship. |
