Abstract:
|
A detailed explanation of economic globalization within U.S. auto manufacturing is provided. Evidence is adduced to argue that, in response to intense intra-industry and foreign competition and to increase their power and profits, U.S. auto manufacturing corporations are implementing an anti-labor global production model. Declining rates of unionization within the auto sector, combined with relatively constant levels of U.S. auto manufacturing employment, illustrate the precipitous decline in unionization and union density. Accompanying the decline in union density is an overall decline in workers’ power and working conditions, as the auto industry labor force confronts and attempts to deal with an autocratic production regime. |
