Abstract:

This study examined the implications of Thai cultural values for young adults' conflicts and the relationship of cultural values to family satisfaction and communication competence. Five hundred and twenty-three young Thai adults completed questionnaires and twenty young adults participated in personal interviews. The findings that are discussed include, first, that the Thai qualities that emphasize smooth interpersonal relationships, education and competence, interdependence, grateful relationship orientation, and flexibility-and-adjustment serve as the best predictors of young adult's conflict tactics. Second, young adults' family satisfaction is significantly predicted by their levels of verbal aggression, approach to problem-solving, and withdrawal tactics. These findings, as well as other conclusions concerning the relationship between Thai culture and conflict management within the family, are examined in terms of conclusions that are suggested about young adults' communication competence and satisfaction with their family culture.
