Abstract:

Mody’s contextual analysis framework (1987) is used to understand how China’s economic, political and cultural characteristics shaped the development of the satellite program over the last 47 years, leading to a man in space in October 2003. The satellite development program is divided into two phases. Phase I, from 1956 to 1977, is marked by nationalism and military concern as the impetus that pushed the satellite industry. Phase II, from 1978 to the present, is characterized by China’s efforts to commercialize the industry. The importance of context-specific analysis over generalizations about the national diffusion of space technology is stressed.
