Abstract:

This paper presents an analysis of the performance of a longitudinal sample of middle school students on four written assessments designed to test competencies in mathematical justification and proof. Results indicate that while the majority of students were unsuccessful in producing or choosing proof-like arguments on any of the assessments, performance improved on all items from 6th to 8th grade.
