Abstract:

A presentation on Belle da Costa Greene (1979-1950) will make known the many accomplishments of the first director of the Pierpont Morgan Library. Hired to manage the collections of financier J. P. Morgan in 1905, Belle da Costa Greene led New York City’s Pierpont Morgan Library from a private collection to one of the most preeminent public research institutions. Greene, without a college education, worked in the Princeton University Library where she developed her knowledge and appreciation of rare books and manuscripts. Mentored by many, Belle da Costa Greene became one of the most knowledgeable and astute appraisers of antiquarian materials, respected throughout the United States and Europe. She lived a life of tremendous independence and responsibility not available to many women of her generation. She was able to live her life and complete important work by disguising her origins. The daughter of Richard T. Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard University, Belle passed as being of Portuguese descent. Briefly reviewing the lives and contributions of father and daughter, the presentation will discuss approaches to reclaiming concealed African American historic personalities.
