'The Black University' and its Challenge to Brown v. Board of Education

Abstract:

This paper explores the demands by students for a Black University in the late 1960s. Student demands revolved around a curriculum that empowered Black students and a university that was "relevant" to the perceived needs of the Black community. The calls for a Black University reflected a different intellectual trajectory than the one posed by Brown. For these students, it was the curriculum rather than segregation that was the source of inferior education.
This paper will use the demands for a Black University at Howard University in 1967-1968 and the university's subsequent conference on the subject to demonstrate the differing intellectual assumption held by the students of Black Power from the legal team who navigated the Brown decision a decade earlier.
