Abstract:
|
U.S. domestic violence programs are often cited as ensuring a women’s right to live free from violence within her own home, as heightening her personal safety and as personally empowering her. Many of these programs are also firmly rooted within the legal system, specifically the criminal justice system and subsequently, in individualistic rights discourse. In this paper I argue that there is one overarching problem with the exportation of “model” U.S.-based domestic violence legal reforms – namely a philosophical difference in the causes and consequences of violence against women between the U.S. and the United Nations (UN). This difference then leads to a number of problems in proliferating U.S.-formulated interventions, some of which have also been problematic in the U.S. |
