Abstract:

The proposed study aims to extend research on gender inequalities in health in developing countries. Employing multilevel analysis, the research will investigate the impact of women’s position at the household level as well as the impact of national policy implementation strategies on reproductive health status, in sub-Saharan Africa. The choice of the health indicator, reproductive health, is influenced first by the available data in developing countries, then by the fact that it has significant impact of women’s quality of life, functioning and well being. Policies will be selected based on whether they directly address and could have significant impact on critical women’s health issues, whether they include a gender component, whether they influence women’s economic position, and whether they are measurable and comparable across countries. The goals of the research are: 1) to determine if the effects of women’s position on reproductive health vary across countries; 2) to determine if the effects of national policy implementation strategies on reproductive health status vary across countries; 3) to determine if national policy implementation strategies explain reproductive health status over and above women’s position; 4) to determine if the effects of women’s position on health vary by country specific policy implementation strategies; and 5) to determine if the impact in (4) above differ in rural vs. urban settings.
