Abstract:

In the 1990’s, the federal government established for faith-based organizations. Today ten departments in the federal government, including the Department of Labor and Department of Justice Department of Education and Housing and Urban Development, have Centers for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. As a result of this interest, churches, some of which have a long history of community outreach, are increasingly encouraged to build on their programming to include delinquency prevention and prisoner re-entry initiatives. A body of literature has developed around the role of the church and the effect it could have on the individual. This literature remains largely focused on descriptions of programs though program evaluations are promised for some of the larger programs. Comparatively less has been done on the role of the church at the neighborhood level, either theoretically or empirically. Using recent developments in social disorganization theory, a theoretical model for understanding the role of the church in neighborhood crime rates is developed for future testing.
