Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: This paper explores the risk factors for sexual victimization among adolescent females, with a particular focus on peer network and target suitability factors. Building on earlier research on peer networks and victimization, we predict that teenage females enmeshed in (1) deviant peer networks, (2) predominantly male networks, and (3) networks containing peers who are older will have a greater likelihood of sexual victimization. We also extend earlier research by examining physical attractiveness and early pubertal development as sources of increased target suitability and therefore increased risk. This research tests these hypotheses using nationally representative data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (Add Health). |
