Abstract:

In this presentation, two overseas study and training tours by Japanese students are compared, and both are analyzed in terms of their educational goals and core elements. The program in Australia was developed with the Centre for Rainforest Studies in the Atherton Tableland of Northern Queensland and includes on-site learning, an interdisciplinary approach, problem solving, and restoration activities. The program in US National Parks was developed in cooperation with Teton Science School in Wyoming, and also includes discrete components taught by the Yellowstone Association Institute in Yellowstone NP and the Headlands Institute in the San Francisco Bay area. In both programs a hands-on, student-centered, and very much experiential curriculum was combined with content-based language learning to give rich and meaningful experience to the students. Educators interested in international and multicultural programs, language learning through Environmental Education, and Education in, about, and for the Environment are encouraged to attend this session and join in discussion.
