Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to assess factors that influence public satisfaction with police. We investigate how individual-level variables, including demographic characteristics, victimization and experience with police, and neighborhood-level variables, including social disorganization and community disorder, affect residents’ satisfaction with police. Using hierarchical linear modeling on 2,045 individuals nested within 66 neighborhoods, we found that at the individual level, age, race, victimization, and experience with police were significantly related to satisfaction with police. At the neighborhood level, those living in concentrated disadvantaged neighborhoods and in neighborhoods with high population mobility rates tend to be less satisfied with the police. In addition, neighborhoods that exhibit a high degree of social disorder, physical disorder as well as a high crime rate also bred dissatisfaction with police.
