Abstract:

Within the criminal career and life-course literature, little attention has been given to the onset of criminal careers during adulthood and factors influencing the onset of adult female criminal careers in particular. The limited research that has been conducted suggests that factors leading to the criminal behavior of more youthful offenders, typically with disadvantaged backgrounds, may differ significantly than those of older offenders who often have a history of conventional behavior, increased levels of human capital, social capital, and social support. This presentation advocates the theoretical integration of general strain, social support, and social capital theories to better explain adult onset, especially that of female offenders. Preliminary results that test this perspective will be presented.
