Abstract:

Since 1990, when Gottfredson and Hirschi created their General Theory of Crime, (a.k.a- Self-Control theory), a number of tests have indicated that the theory finds support in explaining various types of deviance ranging from computer fraud to violence. Investigators have also debated what predicts low-control, poor parenting (the major cause of low-self control according to the theory), and some of the important shortcomings that have been discovered that pertain to the theory. While criminologists have frequently discussed the effects of various demographic traits, such as race, within the context of self-control theory, most have done so in the traditional way and simply included demographic variables as controls while examining the effects of the main concepts of the theory. Moreover, very few researchers have directly examined the issue of whether or not self-control could vary by race or ethnic group. This study seeks to begin discussion of this matter by determining if self-control varies by race. Data and results on this question are discussed and presented. |
