In this research paper self-reported data on perceived crime trends, victimization, fear of crime, and perceived efficacy of the criminal justice system collected in Croatia from a representative sample of 1,238 adults during 2003, and from a representative sample of 1,004 adults during 2005 will be presented and compared. Study results will be also compared with data available from other countries. The general aim of these studies was to assess magnitude of the effects of socio-demographic variables, previous victimization, perception of crime problems and their severity, use of crime prevention measures, and satisfaction with effectiveness of social control institutions in predicting personal crime concern, public opinion on national crime trends, and personal safety. In this paper, an overview of the major findings from those studies as well as possible explanations of fear of crime, victimization and perceived effectiveness of social control institutions in a national and cross-national context will be presented. Particular attention will be given to the similarities and differences in results collected over those two years in Croatia, and in similar studies from other countries. |
