Social Control and Risky Behaviors: Delinquent Pathways and Outcomes of Males and Females.

Abstract:

Social control theory has established a connection between family, school, and community factors that influence delinquency. Although it has been criticized for not including gender in its original form (Hirschi 1969), recent research has examined gender differences in the effect of social control on pathways to delinquency. These efforts have typically focused on traditional delinquency measures and may ignore different expressions of delinquency for female adolescents compared to males. This study uses social control as a theoretical framework for exploring differences between male and female delinquency measured in terms of traditional risky behaviors (drug and alcohol use) and other less frequently measured forms of risky behaviors including risky sexual activity. Using a high school sample of self reported delinquency and risky behavior, the paper examines how pathways to and forms of delinquency vary by gender.
