Life, or Something Like It: Pains of Imprisonment Among Life-Sentence Prisoners

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Life-Sentence prisoners must adapt to the pressures of close confinement as well as to the prospect of “death by prison,” since many if not most lifers face the realistic threat of dying in confinement. Using Sykes’ classic conception of the pains of imprisonment as a starting point, and drawing on original interviews as well as existing research, we will examine the stresses of life and adjustment as experienced by life-sentence prisoners.
