Abstract:
|
This paper examines substance use and abuse behaviors of sexual-minority youth and the alternative hypothesis that the push and/or pull toward substances does not necessarily result from psychological distress but that substance use for these teens occurs primarily in social settings and acts as a segue to a community in which the teen feels most comfortable. Substances may be a part of a sexual-minority peer culture and using allows for a simpler and more unquestioned acceptance into a group of similarly oriented individuals. This paper also investigates the use of substances as a means to decrease inhibitions in social settings that the teen may feel discomfort. This paper intends to argue that the motivations behind substance use and abuse indicate the presence of a network of similarly situated individuals who can provide support and aid in the development of a stronger identity. |
