Drugs and Communities: Assessing the Differential Impact of Drug-Related Arrests on Community Conditions Across White, African American, and Recent Immigrant Communities

Abstract:

Incarceration rates have caused notable damage to the social fabric of urban communities. One-third of African American males in the United States will serve time under some type of correctional supervision and the rising incarceration of drug offenders is undeniable. What is less common in research is investigating the impact of drug-related arrests on communities. Because of racial disparities in arrest rates for drug offenses, coupled with racial residential segregation and the concentration of recent immigrants geographically, the potential for differential effects across communities is probable. It is therefore the goal of this study to identify potential links between drug-related arrests and the degree of concentrated disadvantage in Miami communities. Using census and arrest data on Miami-Dade census tracts, this research seeks to identify the impact of drug-related arrests on levels of urban disadvantage, and further, will check for the differential impact of drug-related arrests on community types comprised of whites, African Americans, and recent Latino immigrants into the Miami-Dade area.
