Abstract:

Problem behavior theory claims that sexual activity is one symptom or indicator of a syndrome of adolescent problem behavior, particularly when it occurs in the early teenage years. According to problem behavior theory, sex, substance use and minor delinquency are all indicative of the same underlying syndrome. We argue that the adolescent sex is more complicated. We suggest that the association between adolescent sex and delinquency is often weak enough to consider these two phenomena as independent of each other; moreover, we maintain that their association is conditioned by the circumstances in which the sexual activity occurs. Using data from waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a nationally representative sample of 7-12th graders in the United States, we explore the contexts of adolescent sexuality and its consequences for delinquency. We first use factor analysis to examine the independence of sexual activity, substance use and minor delinquency. We then use a selection equation to model for selection into sexual activity and negative binomial regression to examine the interactive effect of sexual intercourse and relationship context on substance use and minor crime. Our findings suggest that sex is often distinct from delinquency, and the effects of adolescent sexuality depend on the context in which sex occurs.
