Abstract:

The effects of increasing police manpower levels on crime reduction have been studied since the 1960s. Although there are more than forty published studies, only a few recent studies have consistently proved the deterrence effects of police strength on violent crimes. The latest studies, however, are not free from some methodological issues: large city samples only, dynamic feature in police strengths and crime rates, unit heterogeneity, and simultaneity bias. The present paper reassesses the topic after handling these methodological issues. The relationship between police strengths and violent crime rates for U.S. cities with more than 50,000 population is reassessed. In the analysis, first differenced generalized method of moments is applied for a dynamic panel estimator.
