Abstract:

Despite increased attention to the issue of terrorism, scientific research on the topic remains limited. The purpose of this study is to describe the background characteristics and motivational factors of members of the religiously motivated Turkish Hezbollah terror organization. Turkish Hezbollah has been active in Turkey for 26 years. Currently, it is estimated to have about 4,000 members including the captured ones. This paper will provide background on Turkish Hezbollah in terms of the group’s historical development and involvement in terrorist activities. The paper then focuses on an analysis of individual characteristics of members of the organization. Specifically, the analysis will focus on the motivational factors and related reasons that influenced members to join Turkish Hezbollah. The study is based on qualitative content analysis of original handwritten documents that were written by members of Turkish Hezbollah for the organization that were captured by the police during the operations against terrorist cells. Implications for theory about terrorist organizations as well as policy implications for intervening with such organizations are discussed. |
