Abstract:

This paper develops a theoretical model on the interconnections between multiple forms of violence exposure. We examine levels and correlates of adult intimate partner violence and child maltreatment using longitudinal cohort data from the Project for Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods. Preliminary analyses indicate that neighborhood socio-economic disadvantage is negatively associated with adult intimate partner violence. The influences of neighborhood and family contextual factors on adult intimate partner violence are then tested in multilevel models. Adult intimate partner violence is examined as a potential mediating pathway between neighborhood context and child maltreatment.
