Abstract:

Drug courts are an innovative alternative to prison with emphasis on accountability and intensive monitoring for individuals charged with drug related charges. The Fifth Judicial District’s Drug Court Program began as a result of the passage of a Senate Bill establishing a non-prison sanction of certified drug abuse treatment programs for convictions of felony drug possession. Looking at one year of program graduation, the National Institute of Justice found that of the 17,000 drug court graduates nationwide in 2003, only 16.4 percent had been rearrested and charged with a felony offense (Roman, Townsend, and Bhati, 2003). The current research discusses implications of drug court practice and drug policy for the Fifth Judicial District’s Drug Court Program and important directions for future research in drug courts are propose.
