This paper explores the work of the largely forgotten American anarchist, Lysander Spooner. It focuses on Spooner's characterization of poverty as a consequence of government policy, and his attempts to craft a solution by modifying the rules of capitalism. Surprisingly, though Spooner's suggestions include a commitment to self-employment and recognition of a natural right to contract, his analysis reveals a fundamentally anarchist and/or left-libertarian approach. |
