Abstract:
|
This paper examines the theoretical and empirical relationships between confidence in legal institutions and democracy in Latin America. We employ survey data from the Latin American Public Opinion project housed at Vanderbilt University and other relevant sources to consider the interaction between confidence in courts and other institutions in a politically unstable environment. Our results have relevance for the debate about democratization as we assert that confidence in courts is critical to the development of a political culture which respects the rule of law and supports democratic processes. |
