Abstract:

DNC has established partnerships with five local Latino organizations, including the West Side Boys and Girls Club, Neighborhood House, Garlough Elementary - Building Bridges Program, La Oportunidad, and Roosevelt High School in St. Paul. These organizations have written letters of support for the nature center, which has enabled DNC to receive funding from Excel Energy and Baring Share to provide scholarships to Latino children and families. Last summer DNC was able to offer about $7000 in scholarship money. Key leaders in the Latino community have also spread the word about the nature center, resulting in increased Latino attendance at special events and summer camps. Other changes include a new kiosk at DNC providing information in both Spanish and English, and the recruitment of a seasonal staff person who speaks conversational Spanish. DNC is currently preparing to embark on a long term partnership with Garlough Elementary as it becomes an environmental magnet school. The nature center's involvement with this multicultural school, especially with the Building Bridges program, suggests a bright future for DNC and the local community.
