Abstract:

In the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire women and men wear traditional clothing made from manufactured fabric called pagne. Pagne motifs are named by women who in turn wear the cloth to communicate information about their views, including political affiliation. In this study, pagne motifs are analyzed using a combination of African feminist theory and historiography to reveal how women have adapted their communication practices to resist hegemonic influences inherited from a colonial past. Women wear pagne to speak out and thus have created a medium of expression that allows for their empowerment. Women's political activism in the Cote d'Ivoire speaks to a changing political environment and points to the tension that exists between the past and the present.
